Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in Australia and is rapidly reaching epedemic proportions.
Did you know that 60-70% of those with diabetes will develop peripheral neuropathy, or lose sensation in their feet.
Diabetic foot screening
Ryan James Podiatry has devised an evidence based screening tool to assess your risk of diabetic foot complications comprised of vascular assessment, neurological assessment and recording of deformity and pressure areas.
Vascular status is assessed by using Doppler ultrasound to assess the big arteries and Photoplethysmography to assess the microvasculature.
Neurological status is assessed by using a Neurothesiometer. A neurothesiometer is the gold standard non-invasive nerve test.
A neuothesiometer is able to give an electronic reading of how well your nerves are functioning. These readings are able to be tested periodically to detect any abnormal changes.
It may be beneficial for the podiatrist to test for areas of high pressure with our Tekscan Mat to prevent complications and provide patients with a strong understanding of potential problem areas.
If you know of a family member or friend who has Diabetes, encourage them to see a Podiatrist regularly to promote optimum foot health.
Cara is our resident specialist diabetic podiatrist, so if you are diabetic, or pre-diabetic, book an appointment to see her right away.
